Owls Set For Summer League Action

PHILADELPHIA - A total of 16 Temple baseball players will play in seven different summer baseball leagues in preparation for the 2010 season. Several players will experience another area of the country, while others return home or stay local for the summer season.

The Owls will send six players to the Cal Ripken, Sr., Collegiate Baseball League and three to the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Other leagues that include Temple players are the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, the Clark Griffith League, the Coastal Plain League, the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and the Mountain Collegiate Summer Baseball League.

Senior Tony Jusino, junior Ben White and redshirt freshman Steve Visnic will be teammates on the Maryland Redbirds in the Ripken League. Jusino earned all-Big 5 honors this season after batting .363 with three homers and 39 RBI for TU in 2009. White led the team in starts (13), innings (72.1) and strikeouts (49) while finishing second in wins.

Sophomores Dan Moller, Jabair Khan and Taylor Juran will be teammates on the Ripken League's Rockville Express. Moller pitched 68 innings in his rookie campaign, winning three games and striking out 38. Khan batted .250 in 20 starts, while Juran hit .214 with eight RBI in 11 starts behind the plate and at first base.

In the NYCBL, senior Matt Blackburn and junior Ryan Ferguson will be teammates on the Elmira Pioneers. Blackburn won three games out of the bullpen and led the team with four saves. Ferguson batted .333 with four doubles in 13 games (five starts) this spring. Ben Flanary will suit up for the Watertown Wizards of the NYCBL after hitting .203 with seven RBI in 37 games (12 starts) for TU.

Senior Mike Click will play for the Xenia Scouts, an Athletes in Action affiliated team in the Great Lakes League. Click had a career-best season for Temple in 2009, going 1-3 with a 5.34 ERA.

Sophomore Foster Dunigan and redshirt freshman Drew Shaw will compete in the Clark Griffith League for the DC Grays and Carney Pirates, respectively. Dunigan batted .391 in eight starts as a freshman.

In the ACBL, junior Rafael Cordero will play for the Northern New Jersey Eagles and Tyler Horst will pitch for the Kutztown Rockies. Cordero batted .310 in 13 starts for Temple, while Horst appeared in 19 games and 49.2 innings as a freshman.

Junior Byron McKoy will patrol the outfield for the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League. McKoy batted .278 with 10 doubles, eight homers and 28 RBI this spring.

Redshirt freshman Matt Elko will catch for the Fort Collins Foxes of the Mountain Collegiate Summer Baseball League.
