Fencers Compete At US Fencing Association National Championships

PHILADELPHIA - The nation's top fencers gathered in Grapevine, Texas last week for the US Fencing Association National Championships. Among the 6,000 competitors, Temple was well-represented by senior Melissa Parker, sophomores Kamali Thompson and Cara Taggersell, incoming sophomore Alyssa Lomuscio, incoming freshman Mikayla Varadi, and Owls' assistant coach Bradley Baker.
In the Senior Women's Foil, Parker took a 12th place finish, while Lomuscio advanced to the finals, finishing third. Also faring well in the event were Varadi, placing 17th, and Taggersell, finishing 41st. In the sabre, Thompson placed 23rd in the Senior Women's event, and took 31st in the Under-19 event.
In the Under-19 Women's Foil Event, Varadi placed 17th, followed by Lomuscio in 27th and Taggersell in 38th place.
Coach Baker showed off his skills in the Division IA Men's Sabre event, taking third place.
The tournament, which ran from July 3-12, brings the top fencers from all 50 states to compete for national titles over 10 full days of competition.
