'09 season features home showdown with 2-time national champ Penn State
PHILADELPHIA – Head coach Bob Bertucci and the Temple women's volleyball team, currently in preparations for the start of their season, have announced their opponents for the 2009 campaign. In a schedule that already includes non-conference foes Virginia Commonwealth and St. John's, the Owls will have a home showdown with defending two-time national champs Penn State.
To kick-off the 2009 season, TU will travel to Richmond, Va. on August 28 for the VCU Invitational. The Owls will compete in three games while there, facing host VCU along with Wright State and St. John's.
Following the VCU Invitational, the Owls will do battle with city-foes Penn, La Salle, and Villanova in the Big 5 Tournament. The tournament, hosted by Penn, will commence Sept. 11-12.
In consecutive days, the Cherry and White will square off with Penn State, hosting the Nittany Lions on Sept. 18 at McGonigle Hall (7:00 p.m.), and then traveling to State College, Pa. on Sept. 19th (7:00 p.m.).
Atlantic 10 play will begin at home for Temple, with Charlotte and George Washington visiting North Broad Street on Sept. 25 and 26, respectively. The Colonials finished the regular season in a first place tie with Saint Louis a year ago.
After a brief stint in Ohio competing against Dayton and Xavier, the Cherry and White return to the Philadelphia area for a bout at La Salle (Oct. 13, 12:00 p.m.). Following their match against the Explorers, TU will host Fordham and Rhode Island on Oct. 16 and 17.
A three-game road series against Duquesne, defending A-10 champ Saint Louis, and George Washington will have the Owls away from the confines of McGonigle Hall from Oct. 23-25.
Opening up November with a two game set against Dayton and La Salle, the Owls close out the season with a trip to Fordham and Charlotte, followed by a visit from Saint Louis on Nov. 14.
