Owls will face the top-ranked powerhouse at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle on Sept. 18

PHILADELPHIA – If you're looking for quality competition in collegiate volleyball, it doesn't get any better than two-time defending national champs Penn State. The Temple volleyball team will face the top-ranked Nittany Lions twice this week, including in its home opener on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.

Admission to the match will cost $3.00 per person or $25.00 for a team wearing volleyball uniforms, jackets or similar clothing. Doors will open at approximately 6:00 p.m. For advance ticket sales, please contact Mike Bamonti at 215-204-4271. Please have credit card information ready prior to calling. Tickets can also be purchased on a walk-up basis at McGonigle Hall the night of the match.

The Owls are 3-3 so far this season, and have not played a match since Sept. 5. They most recently went 2-1 at the Big 5 Tournament, finishing second of four teams (Penn, La Salle and Villanova). Senior Jackie Morrison and junior Yun Yi Zhang were both named to the Big 5 All-Tournament Team.

Penn State cruised to a 38-0 record last year, not dropping a single set until the national championship semifinal where they defeated Nebraska 3-2 before going on to sweep Stanford 3-0 in the championship match. The defending champs are back to their old ways so far this year, currently at 9-0 without a single set lost. They have now extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 73 consecutive matches. The team to come nearest so far this year is A-10 powerhouse St. Louis, who took Penn State to 29-27 in set one of what still turned out to be a 3-0 win for the Nittany Lions.

After playing Penn State on Friday night, the Owls will board a bus for State College and play two matches at Penn State's Rec Hall on Saturday. First up will be a neutral match vs. St. Francis (PA) at 2:00 p.m., followed by another contest against the Nittany Lions at 7:30 p.m.
