Asjes appeared in six games, helping the Netherlands to a sixth place finish

PHILADELPHIA  – Former Temple baseball pitcher Arshwin Asjes recently represented the Netherlands in the 2009 Baseball World Cup. Asjes made six appearances in the tournament, leading his native country to a 7-4 overall record for a sixth place finish.

“It was a great honor to represent the Netherlands in the Baseball World Cup,” said Asjes. “To be a member of that team was very special, and to be a representative of Temple on a national level meant that much more.”

Asjes struck out four batters over 7.2 innings of work, only allowing five hits over the course of the tournament. At TU, he played under current head coach Rob Valli, and ranks third all-time in saves with 10.

“I am extremely proud of Arshwin. He had the courage to come to America and attend high school with the hopes of earning a great education and one day play professional baseball,” commented Valli. “To Arshwin's credit, he has achieved both of those goals. He performed very well in his first season of professional ball, which led to the opportunity to represent his county in the 2009 Baseball World Cup.”
