Temple Fencers Return From Successful Weekend At North American Cup
1.19.10 | Women's Fencing
Owls place finalists in first three events held
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Temple fencing team traveled to San Jose, Calif. this past weekend to compete in the North American Cup, run by the US Fencing Association.
“To make the top 32 in an event is an excellent result for our fencers,” commented head coach Nikki Franke. “To make the final eight is extraordinary. This weekend, we had four finalists and six additional top 32 finishers.”
The tournament, which is held four times a year, is used by participants to earn national points towards selections to the World Championship, Pan American, and Olympic Games. In each event, the top 32 finishers receive national points that accumulate throughout the season.
This weekend, Temple had finalists in the first three events that were held. On Friday, sophomore Jill Bratton placed sixth in the Under 20 (Junior) Women's Epee event.
On Saturday, sophomore Kamali Thompson placed 5th in the Division I (all ages) Women's Sabre competition. In addition, sophomore Alyssa Lomuscio finished eighth in the Under 20 Women's Foil event. On Sunday, the Owl's best results in Division I Women's Epee were senior Kristin Howell (17) and Bratton (19).
Also, Temple assistant coach Bradley Baker was a finalist in Division I Men's Sabre and placed fifth, a very exciting feat for the team to see. The Owls enjoyed cheering him on throughout the competition.
On Monday, Temple's top finishers were Thompson, who took 20th in Under 20 Women's Sabre, and Lomuscio, who placed 26th in Division I Women's Foil.
