Owls top North Carolina and Haverford on the day
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Temple women's fencing team was back in action on Saturday at Pennsylvania State University. The Owls were victorious against both the University of North Carolina and Haverford College, moving their overall record to 6-1.
The Owls had seven fencers finish undefeated on the day. TU was led by sophomore Jill Bratton, who finished the day 6-0. Freshman Mikayla Varadi and junior Audrey Barroso both finished 4-0, while teammates Melissa Parker, Grace Wu, Alyssa Lomuscio and Kamali Thompson finished 3-0. At least two fencers from each squad finished the day without a loss.
The first meet of the day saw the Owls (6-1) face the Black Squirrels (7-7) of Haverford. After defeating the Squirrels 7-2 in Epee, and 8-1 in Foil, the Sabre squad finished with an impressive 9-0 sweep. The final score was 24-3.
After a break in the action, Temple came back to face a well coached UNC (10-10) team. Temple's Epee and Foil squads fenced very well, with both squads winning 8-1 while the Sabre squad finished 4-5. The final score was Temple 20, UNC 7.
"I was very pleased with our performance today," head coach Nikki Franke said. "We had very good focus and continue to improve with every match. This is very important as we prepare for next week's meet."
The next action for the Owls is a trip to the midwest for the Northwestern Multi-Meet, on January 30th and 31st, where they will try to avenge the season's only loss, which came at the hands of #5 Northwestern. Competition also includes, three other teams ranked in the Top 10.
