Three Singles Players Advance to Semis; Clermont and Cramer Take Second at Doubles
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's women's tennis team traveled to Old Dominion for the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational on October 8-10, 2010. Three Owls singles players advanced to the semifinals at the competitive event.
Theresa Stangl, playing at A1 Singles, took her opening round match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 against Navy's Kourtney Howell. In the quarterfinal round, Stangl dropped her opening set, 3-6, but came back to defeat Michelle Brown of Howard in the final two (7-5, 1-0 (2)) to move on to the semifinals. Stephanie Wetmore of Georgetown finally got to the senior with a 7-5, 6-3 win to end Stangl's run for the title.
Yana Mavrina represented Temple at B1 Singles, beating Elise Leizerovich (Drexel) in the opening round, 6-1, 6-3. She used straight sets again to win over Navy's Darien Sears, 6-2, 6-4, before dropping her semifinal match to eventual champion Jocelyn Lu of Pittsburgh, 6-4, 6-2.
Also successful in the main draw was Christine Clermont, playing at C1 Singles. Clermont got by Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Delaware), 6-3, 6-2, before dropping just one game in the quarterfinals to Brittney Boucher of Navy, 6-1, 6-0. Sonja Stosic of Drexel was up one set in the semifinal match before Clermont was forced to retire due to injury.
In doubles play, Clermont teamed up with Mellana Cramer at the C2 draw to claim second place. The duo defeated Sabrina Fedele and Andie Keyser-Baker in the opening round, 8-3. The pair then made quick work of the mixed doubles team of Kelly Domingo (Delaware) and Maryna Kariuk (Norfolk State) to advance to the finals, 8-1. Howard's Brooke Hawthorne and Brittney Morgan needed everything to take the title, sneaking by the Owls' pair, 9-7.
The squad wraps up the fall season with play at the ITA Regionals at Old Dominion on October 21-24, 2010.
