PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The 2011 version of the Temple women's tennis team takes to the courts for the first time this spring when it travels to New Hampshire for two matches on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23. The Owls face host Dartmouth on Saturday at 12 p.m., and then square off against Southern New Hampshire at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The Cherry and White return six letterwinners from a team that went 11-11 overall in 2010 and finished tied for third place at that Atlantic 10 Championship. Temple also gets two former letterwinners back from injury, and welcomes five newcomers to round out a talented squad.
The two players returning from injury are seniors Christine Clermont (Miami Shore, Fla./Miami County Day) and Elyse Steiner (Allison Park, Pa./Indiana University HS), who will also serve as co-captains this season.
Clermont has enjoyed a solid career for the Owls. In her rookie campaign, she posted a phenomenal 24-3 singles mark, going 14-1 in dual action with an undefeated 9-0 record at number five. As a sophomore, she earned Atlantic 10 second-team all-conference honors with an overall singles record of 8-5 and an impressive 12-2 doubles mark. In her junior season, Clermont totaled a 23-5 singles record for the second-best win total on the team and her second 20-win season. Her 17-4 duals mark, including a 10-3 record at fifth singles, was tops on the team. She also put together a 19-11 doubles record in 2009 which featured a 10 match win streak at the end of the season.
Steiner was also one of Temple's top players before suffering a knee injury. A transfer from the University of Maryland, she burst onto the scene in her first season with the Cherry and White, earning First-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2008. Steiner kept the momentum going into her junior season, going 11-8 as Temple's number one singles player and pairing up to earn 15 wins in doubles action. Her play earned her another spot on the All-Atlantic 10 first team.
Josephine Bergman (Landscrona, Sweden/Justus Tranchell Gymnasiet), Lucie Pazderova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nad Stolov) and Theresa Stangl (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) make up the rest of the senior class.
Bergman was a utility player for the Owls in the truest sense of the word last season. The junior played at least one match at every flight during the year, and was most successful at number two, going 4-2. Her versatility earned her a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.
Pazderova reached double figures in singles victories for the third straight season with her 11-15 overall record while playing anywhere from number one to number four. She went 4-2 in tournament action, and was 3-2 against conference opponents.
Stangl had a solid campaign for TU a year ago, going 16-11 in singles play while competing at the third and fourth flights. The junior's 8-2 record at number four was tops on the team at that flight and she ended the year on a four-match win-streak. The lefty teamed up with freshman May Johnson to post a competitive 7-5 doubles record at number three, and also earned a selection to the all-conference second-team.
Mellana Cramer (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) is the lone junior on the team. Cramer was active in four matches last year, going 3-4, while also posting a 2-1 record in tournament action.
With no sophomores on the squad, just one junior and the five seniors, head coach Steve Mauro will be grooming a talented group of five freshmen to carry on the success of the program. Those players are Jordan Batey (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood), Carly Bohman (Oakville, Ontario/Cawthra Park), Alicia Doms (Barcelona, Spain/IES Francesc Macia), Amy Evans (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) and Yana Mavrina (Yaroslavl, Russia/Secondary School 84).
The Owls open the season at Dartmouth for the second-straight season, looking to reverse a 7-0 defeat to the Big Green last year. Dartmouth enters the match ranked 61st in the country. TU takes a quick break after this weekend before opening the home schedule against Drexel on February 4.
Along with Dartmouth, Southern New Hampshire and Drexel to open the year, Temple will face some other powerful non-conference opponents. The Owls will see two other Ivy League schools in Penn and Columbia early in the season, while hosting Syracuse in early March and traveling to Penn State at the end of the month.
The Cherry and White jump right into Atlantic 10 play with back-to-back matches against rivals Richmond (at Penn) and George Washington at home on February 12 and 13, respectively. Other dates against conference foes are March 18 at Dayton, March 20 at Xavier, March 30 at Fordham, April 1 at Duquesne, and against Saint Joseph's at home on April 5 for the final match of the season.
TU will head to the Atlantic 10 Championship on April 8-10 in Charlottesville, Va. to vie for the conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament.
