Owls hold annual intrasquad scrimmage at Skip Wilson Field this weekend
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple baseball team concludes its fall practice season with the annual Cherry and White Fall Classic, to be held October 22 & 23 at Skip Wilson Field. The best of seven series begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 22 with games one, two and three. The series wraps on Saturday, October 23 with games four through seven beginning at 9:30 a.m.
On Friday, academic coordinator Shawn Fagan will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Doing the honors on Saturday will be team strength and conditioning coach Marc Proto.
Last season, Team Cherry won a shortened series by sweeping Team White in four games. Then-junior Ben White threw game three of last year's competition, striking out five and not allowing a hit or walk. White, a 2010 Philadelphia Big 5 All-Star, returns as one of eight seniors that headline the 2011 team.
White will serve as Cherry manager for the series, aided by junior Brant Norlander as assistant coach. The pair will be up against a White squad led by senior Brian Sustersic and redshirt-freshman Ryan Kuehn.
Leading up to the Fall Classic, the Owls will vote on captains for the 2011 squad. The Temple hurlers also step to the dish in the Pitcher's Home Run Derby on Thursday, October 21. Reigning Derby winner redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic returns to defend his crown, hitting a total of seven home runs a year ago.
In his sixth season at the helm, head coach Rob Valli returns 21 letterwinners including three 2010 Philadelphia Big-5 All-Stars in White and fellow seniors Ryan Ferguson and Adrian Perez. Redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak also returns as one of the Owls' top three hitters of last season.
