Nikorak named captain second-straight year, first for Ferguson

PHILADELPHIA - In voting conducted by the Temple baseball team, senior Ryan Ferguson and redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak have been named captains of the 2010-11 squad.  Ferguson dons the "C" for the first time in his career, while Nikorak continues the duties of captain from 2009-10.

"I'm proud of how well Ryan and Steve represent our baseball program," commented head coach Rob Valli. "Their passion to work hard and compete is the model for every player on our team. Both came to us as walk on players and have earned scholarships along the way."

A walk on in 2009, Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA/Garnett Valley) broke out in 2010 to lead the team in batting average (.328), hits (62), triples (2) and RBI (40). Serving as the Owls' primary catcher, Ferguson was one of four players to appear in all 51 games, making 49 starts. He turned it on for conference play, driving in 28 runs with a team high 35 hits and four home runs.

Joining the Owls in 2008, Nikorak (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) suffered a season ending injury in 2009 only to comeback as one of the Owls' top all-around players. He ranked as one of the best three hitters from last season, batting .318 with a team-best 18 doubles.  Nikorak pitched out of the third spot in the Owls' rotation and when not on the hill, he commanded the hot corner for Temple.
