PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Katie Briglia scored the first three goals of the game in an eight-minute span to lead the Temple field hockey team to a 5-0 win over Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. It was the sixth shutout of the season for TU goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple.
The Owls improve to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10. They have one more weekend of play (two games) to try to clinch a spot in the four-team A-10 Tournament that will be held at Temple Nov. 5-6.
In the ninth minute of the game, Briglia scored her first goal on an unassisted shot directly in front of the net past Saint Louis goalkeeper Alex LaBarge.
A few minutes later Briglia deflected in a shot by teammate Kaylee Keener to put the Owls up 2-0, and with 16:49 elapsed, Briglia completed the hat trick on a penalty corner with assists from Keener and Taryn Nichols.
“Katie is doing really well and is just a sophomore,” said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. “She plays with a lot of confidence and when she's on she's tough to stop. She has played both defense and forward for us so it's great to see her be able to execute up top.”
Nichols added to Temple's total in the second half when she put in a shot by Molly Doyle that had rebounded off the post.
The Owls got their final tally of the game from Keener who scored on a penalty stroke in the 67th minute.
“It was such a great team effort and we got contributions from a variety of people today,” said Janney. “I was happy to reward some of our other players with playing time they deserve. Everyone on the team works really hard.”
Temple will play its next game on the road at Richmond next Friday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. The Owls will return home on Sunday, Oct. 31 for their final regular season game against Lock Haven at 12:00 p.m. Temple will honor its four seniors prior to the start of the game for Senior Day.
