PHILADELPHIA – Despite a career-high 32 points from senior Qwedia Wallace, the Temple women's basketball team dropped its season-opener to #7/7 Ohio State, 84-75. The Owls (0-1) tied the game with under 10 minutes remaining, but could not get a lead on the powerhouse Buckeyes (1-0) out of the Big Ten.

Ohio State's Jantel Lavender proved nearly unstoppable, scoring a game and career-high 37 points, as well as grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Tayler Hill and Brittany Johnson added 16 points apiece for the Buckeyes.

Wallace drained a career-high 7-of-12 from behind the arc, with five of those coming in the second half. Also scoring in double figures for Temple was junior Shey Peddy with 10 points in her Temple debut along with a team-high seven assists. Newcomer and junior Satoria Bell scored nine points as did junior Kristen McCarthy.

McCarthy scored the first bucket of the game as part of a 5-0 opening run for Temple that included Wallace's first three-pointer, but the Buckeyes went on to score nine unanswered points and led 9-5 with four minutes elapsed in the first half.

Lavender scored back-to-back layups near the 10-minute mark to give the Buckeyes an 11-point, 25-14 lead.

Temple chipped away and a three-pointer by Peddy followed by a Satoria Bell layup at 2:26 put the Owls within one, 33-32. Temple would get no closer in the half and trailed by five, 39-34 at the break.

Wallace led the Owls with 10 points at halftime, and Natasha Thames pulled down eight rebounds in the first half for Temple.

Ohio State increased its lead to eight early in the second half, but five minutes in the Owls trailed by only three, 46-43.

Peddy's second three-pointer found the back of the net with 12:14 remaining to narrow the margin to two points, 54-52, and a layup by Wallace at 9:06 tied the game for the first time at 58-58.

After one more tied score at 60-60, the Buckeyes used a 15-4 run over a four-minute span to take their second 11-point lead of the game.

Wallace sank three treys in the final two and half minutes, twice narrowing the margin to seven points, but the Buckeyes' solid free throw shooting was enough to hold Temple off.

Ohio State shot nearly 59 percent from the field while the Owls shot 43 percent, but Temple was an impressive 12-of-23 from behind the arc (52.2 percent). The charity stripe was good to the Buckeyes, who made 22-of-23 at the line while Temple went just 3-of-8.

The Owls will play their second game of the season on the road as they travel to Seton Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 16 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
