May takes first place in final race of career
BRONX, N.Y. - Senior Mike May closed his collegiate career with a first place finish to guide the Temple men's cross country team to a championship repeat at the IC4A Championships in Van Courtland Park on Saturday afternoon. May and fellow senior Eddie Penetar placed in the top five to guide the Owls to their second consecutive title.
Temple edged out Connecticut by a mere four points for the top spot. Fordham came in third, followed by Colgate and BInghamton.
"This was a great way to finish the season," commented assistant coach Matt Jelley. "It was really a complete team effort to repeat as champions, and a great way for the seniors to go out."
May posted a time of 25:24 to take the individual title in the meet, with Penetar placing fourth in a time of 25:33. Junior Travis Mahoney aided the Owls' efforts with a top-10 time of 25:42 to place sixth.
"Mike did a great job closing out his last cross country race," said Jelley. "Having three runners in the top-six was tremendous, but the other guys really stepped up and made it happen."
Junior Ben Thomas was the next fastest Owls' finisher, placing 41st with a time of 26:50. Seniors Eric Conklin and Clarke Hunt had fine days in their final race, placing 61st (27:08) and 75th (27:27), respectively. Freshman Will Kellar backed up their efforts with a time of 27:55 to place 89th. Juniors Geoff Barletta and Dan Carreon ran times of 28:45 and 29:00 to round out the pack.
