PHILADELPHIA - The 2010-11 Temple basketball season has nearly arrived, and the women's basketball team will get things started at home on Friday, Nov. 12 against #7/7 Ohio State at 5:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The game is the first in a Temple doubleheader, as the men's team will take on Seton Hall at 7:30 p.m. For a men's preview, click here.
The game will be webcast live online through OwlAccess, and live stats will also be available.
Ohio State is the highest-ranking team the Owls have ever faced in a season opener. Temple is receiving votes in both the AP Poll and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
Temple finished at 25-9 overall last season, reached the finals of the Atlantic 10 Championships and made its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the second round. Third-year head coach Tonya Cardoza returns six letterwinners, including three starters, to the line-up this season.
Leading the way is junior Kristen McCarthy, an A-10 First Team selection as a sophomore and preseason A-10 First Team pick this season. She returns as the Owls' leading scorer averaging 14.8 points per game last season. She was the Big 5 Player of the Year, and provided one of last year's top highlights in a home win against Charlotte when she scored a program-record 42 points.
Senior Qwedia Wallace has been named to the A-10 Preseason Third Team after ranking as the Owls' second-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game last year.
Ohio State was a 31-5 team last year that advanced to the NCAA Second Round, and is the favorite in the Big Ten after capturing its sixth-straight Big Ten regular season title a year ago along with its second-straight Big Ten Tournament title.
Senior center Jantel Lavender was named to the Associated Press' 2010-11 Preseason All-America Team for the second straight year. Lavender, a two-time WBCA All-American, averaged 21.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and shot 51.4 percent from the field last season in leading Ohio State to a record 31 wins. She became the first Buckeye to score 2,000 points in her junior season, won Big Ten Player of the Year honors for the third year in a row.
Head Coach Jim Foster, a 1980 Temple alum, is in his ninth season at Ohio State with a record of 212-52. This is the first-ever meeting between Temple and Ohio State, but as head coach at Vanderbilt from 1991-2002, Foster was 2-0 against Temple. From 1978-91 Foster coached at Saint Joseph's, where he complied a record of 14-8 against the Owls.
