Women's Basketball Plays Final Regular Season Road Game at Richmond on Wednesday
2.23.10 | Women's Basketball
Owls looking to clinch a bye in the first round of the A-10 Tournament
Game Notes vs. Richmond
PHILADELPHIA - Temple had its five-game win streak snapped with a 71-63 loss at Dayton on Feb. 20, but the Owls need only one win in their last two games to guarantee themselves a bye in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. TU will travel to Richmond for a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and then return home for its final regular season game on Saturday.
Temple is now tied with Dayton for second at 9-3, but the Flyers would have the #2 seed by virtue of their win.
The Owls have won 10 of their last 12 games, thanks to strong defense and impressive rebounding. TU's season rebounding margin of +7.7 ranks 11th in NCAA Division I, and their scoring defense of 54.3 ppg ranks 13th nationally.
Richmond was strong in the non-conference with a record of 11-4, but has gone just under .500 in A-10 play at 5-6. The Spiders have lost two in a row and three of their last four games, most recently dropping a heartbreaker, 67-66 at home to Saint Joseph's on Feb. 21.
Brittani Shells leads the Spiders with 16.5 points per game and is the only player averaging in double figures. Richmond has strong numbers defensively, averaging 11.2 steals per game as a team. The Spiders have committed only 16.5 turnovers per game while their opponents have committed 21.8 turnovers per game.
Temple is 9-3 all-time against Richmond, and the Owls have won four straight. Last year TU earned a 65-52 win in Philadelphia, and in 2007-08 the Owls won 47-40 at Richmond and 70-62 in the A-10 Tournament.
