PHILADELPHIA
- The Temple University Women's Fencing Team finished their dual meet season at home against defending NCAA Champion and second-ranked Penn State University, sixth-ranked St. John's and #11th-ranked Duke University. The Owls used the occasion to honor their three seniors - Christie Griffith, Kristin Howell, and Melissa Parker - for their tremendous contributions over the past four years.

“We really feel that a day of top level competition like this is a great way to close out our regular season and helps prepare us for the upcoming post-season” said Coach Baker.

The Cherry and White fenced hard throughout the day against some of the toughest competition they have fenced this season. Included in today's competition was the 2008 Women's Sabre Olympic Bronze Medalist along with three additional NCAA Champions.

Fittingly, the team was lead by the senior class who helped set the tone for the younger team members on how to approach this tough competition. Kristin Howell led all fencers with a 6-3 record, including a 3-0 record against Duke. Christie Griffith led the sabre squad with a 5-4 record, while Melissa Parker had an identical 5-4 record on the day in foil.

Temple started the day on the wrong end of a closely-fought contest against defending NCAA Champions second-ranked Penn State by a score of 13-14. The Cherry and White followed up with another strong performance, downing 11th-ranked Duke 18-9. The day ended less favorably, as #6 St. John's (NY) came out on fire in the third round and handed the Owls their worst loss of the season at 9-18.

In epee, Howell went 6-3 on the day. Junior Alyssa Lombardi went 2-2, while classmate Grace Wu finished at 3-4. Sophomores Nicola Horscroft (1-0) and Jillian Bratton (0-6) rounded out the epee squad results.

In foil, Parker fenced very well and finished with a 5-4 record. Sophomore Alyssa Lomuscio went 4-4, freshman Mikayla Varadi posted a 3-3 result, sophomore Cara Taggersell finished at 2-1, and sophomore Danielle Jones went 0-1.

In sabre, Griffith led the way at 5-4. Junior Audrey Barroso and sophomore Kamali Thompson had identical 4-4 results, as junior Samantha Pascarelli turned in a 1-1 performance.

Today helped prepare the team for the upcoming post season, beginning next week at the NIWFA Championships, hosted by the United States Military Academy at West Point. The post season continues with NCAA Regionals the following weekend at Drew, where individuals will qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held at the end of March at Harvard University.
