Women's Fencing March Madness Has Begun, Owls Compete At Regionals

Eight of Temple's 12 Regional Qualifiers Place Top 10
MADISON, N.J. – Eight of the 12 Temple women's fencers that qualified for Saturday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional hosted by Drew University placed in the top 10 in their respective weapons. Freshman Mikayla Varadi took the highest finish on the day for Temple, owning a second place finish in foil.
In women's sabre, Temple was led by sophomore Kamali Thompson, who placed seventh in the field of 32. Also making the finals pool of 12 was junior Audrey Barroso, placing 10th. Senior Christie Griffith finished 14th, while junior Samantha Pascarelli narrowly missed the semi-final round, placing 19th. The tournament was won by defending NCAA Champion Becca Ward of Duke University.
Team captain senior Kristin Howell led the way for the Cherry and White in women's epee, finishing fifth of 32. Sophomore Jillian Bratton also made the finals, placing seventh. Juniors Grace Wu and Alyssa Lombardi placed 15th and 26th respectively. The tournament was won by defending NCAA Champion Anastasia Ferdman from Penn State.
Women's foil saw all four Owls in the final pool. Varadi placed second, Melissa Parker was fourth, Alyssa Lomuscio took seventh, and Cara Taggersell claimed 10th place. The 34-person event was won by defending NCAA Champion Doris Willette of Penn State.
Selections for the NCAA National Championships will be announced late Tuesday evening, with the competition scheduled to take place March 25-28, hosted by Harvard University. The selection criteria are based upon a combination of results at the Regional tournament and overall season-long performance.
