NEWARK, Del. - The Temple softball team headed to Delaware for a doubleheader with the Blue Hens on Wednesday, March 17. The Owls split the twinbill, taking the first game, 7-5, and dropping the second, 2-0.
In the opener, the Cherry & White trailed 3-2 after the first inning but opened up the game with a five run third. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out when Danielle Fagan delivered a run scoring single through the left side. Michelle Lerner followed with a ground out that scored another run to give Temple the lead it would never surrender. After another walk packed the bases again, Crystal Nyman sent a single to center field that plated three.
Delaware tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth, but the Owls held on for the victory. Kristen Marris earned the win for Temple, scattering six hits over seven innings. Anne Marie Pagano took the loss, giving up nine hits in a complete game effort.
In the nightcap, runs were hard to come by. Temple left eight runners on base in the scoreless game, and Delaware only produced runs with two of its nine baserunners.
The Blue Hens again jumped on the scoreboard early when Michelle Grap delivered a two-out single up the middle to score Jenny Richards. That was the only offense either team could muster until the host team added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielders choice.
Amanda Stacevicz was the winner for UD, tossing all seven innings and allowing only four hits. Nyman took the loss, giving up seven hits over six innings.
Temple is 6-10 overall and will play its first home game of the season on Friday, March 19. The Owls host Central Connecticut in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
