PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Temple softball team hosted Central Connecticut State on Friday, March 19, for its first game of the season at Ambler Field. On one of the most beautiful weather days of 2010 so far, the sun only seemed to be shining on the visiting team as the Blue Devils defeated the Owls 4-1 and 6-1.
In the first game, CCSU struck early when Kat Knowles drove a two-out two-run shot over the right centerfield fence. Temple cut the lead in half in its portion of the second on a Christina Sykora single up the middle that scored Michelle Lerner who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Central Connecticut got it right back, however, in the top of the third. The Blue Devils took advantage of a TU error to start the inning, moving Becca Mussatti around the bases before a Sarah Vlahos singles knocked her in for the 3-1 lead.
CCSU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth for the 4-1 win.
Elizabeth Montemurro (2-4) earned the win for Central Connecticut, going the distance and allowing just three hits while striking out three. Crystal Nyman (1-8) took the loss, pitching all seven and surrendering only four hits while fanning six.
Game two looked like it might turn into a pitchers dual with both hurlers sitting down the sides in order for the first two frames. The Blue Devils did finally get to Temple's Kristen Marris in the third when Erica Koehler sent a one-out shot over the fence in left center for the 1-0 advantage.
Temple came out in its half of the third and also figured out CCSU pitcher Abby Harpp, tagging her for three hits in the frame. The Owls, however, stranding two runners and could only produce one run in the inning to knot the game at 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities in the fourth, but left two runners on the base path. The Blue Devils struck again in the top of the sixth with three runs on four hits, breaking open the game with a 4-1 lead. CCSU added another two runs in the top of the seventh after Mussatti doubled to open the frame and Sara Budrick drove her in with a home run to left field.
The Owls threatened in their final at-bat when Lauren Spoo reached with a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Harpp got out of the inning with no damage and the win.
Harpp (4-3) went the distance for Central Connecticut, giving up four hits and allowing just one run. Marris (5-5) took the loss, allowing eight hits while striking out five and walking none.
Temple (6-13) will host Drexel for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 21. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. Central Connecticut State is 6-7 overall.
