Owls lose first Atlantic 10 match this season
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Temple men's tennis team put its undefeated record against Atlantic 10 foes to the test on Thursday, March 18, but it was preseason conference favorite George Washington prevailing with a 5-2 victory. The match was a rescheduled bout from February.
GW wrapped up the doubles point with wins at the second and third flights. Filip and Kacper Rams helped TU avoid the sweep with an 8-4 win over Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah at the first flight.
Filip Rams continued his solid play on the day, winning at number one singles over Atalay, 6-3, 6-2, to make it a 1-1 match. The Colonials claimed the next three matches, however, to secure the win. Stanislav Stekolshikov was Temple's other singles winner, coming back from a set down to defeat Richard Blumenfeld 2-6, 6-2, 10-6, at number five.
"This was a disappointing loss for the men, but we hope to regroup," said Temple head coach Steve Mauro. "Credit must be given to George Washington, which played very well today. We look forward to playing them again in the conference tournament."
The Owls fall to 3-7 overall and will host Fordham and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, March 21. The Fordham match, beginning at 10 a.m., will be played at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center while the match against the Terriers will take place at TU Pavilion at 2 p.m.
