PHILADELPHIA
– Junior Adrian Perez went four-for-four in the Temple baseball team's home opener at sunny and warm Skip Wilson Field Friday afternoon, but a big second inning was too much as the Owls (1-12) were defeated by Marist (8-7), 21-8.

Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini retired the side in order to start the game, but struggled there after, allowing nine earned runs but striking out five over five innings of work.

Kyle Putnam took the win, lasting eight innings giving up four earned runs.

Marist struck in the second inning, posting eight runs in the frame. Sparked by a leadoff homerun from Bryce Nugent, the Red Foxes would score seven more runs on six hits to pad their lead.

The Owls got on the board in the bottom of the second. Junior Rafael Cordero (1-5, RBI) led off the inning with a double, and scored on a single from junior Jean Carlos Diaz (2-4, 2 RBI).

A three-run rally in the third would help Temple climb back into the game at 8-4. Perez (4-4, RBI) doubled to get things started, and would advance to third on a single from junior Ryan Ferguson. A botched double play attempt allowed Perez to score, and another error at shortstop plated Nikorak, who reached base on the previous play. Diaz stepped up again, this time with a double, to score sophomore Taylor Juran, who reached base on the second error of the inning.

After trading two scoreless-innings, Marist struck again posting six in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Temple battled with a late rally to put up three runs in the eight. Sophomore Jabair Khan (2-3, 2 R) led off with a single and trotted home on a two-run homer by junior Byron McKoy (1-5, 2 RBI). One more run in the frame would be all the Owls could manage, going down in order in the ninth.

Senior Tony Jusino went one-for-five on the day, doubling in the eight to extend his hit streak to 10 games, hitting safely in 11 of Temple's first 13.

The Owls are back in action Saturday, when they host Niagara at 1:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
