Nine Owls go undefeated on the day

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Temple Fencing team captured its 14th consecutive title at the 82nd Annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships on Saturday, March 6th at the United States Military Academy. The Championships are the oldest continually-running national championship event in women's collegiate sport. This year the tournament included 17 schools.

The Owls repeated as champions in spectacular style, sweeping all three squad titles and two of the three individual titles. As a result, Temple won the overall 3-Weapon Championship receiving the perpetual Olympian's Trophy.

“This was a fantastic performance by our entire team. All of the girls fenced extremely well and I was very pleased with how quickly they were able to adapt during their bouts” said head coach Nikki Franke. “Everyone was fencing consistently well throughout the competition. This will definitely help us as we prepare for the upcoming NCAA Regional Championships next weekend and NCAA Nationals a few weeks later.”

In the team event, there were nine fencers that went undefeated. These included: Grace Wu and Jill Bratton in epee; Melissa Parker, Alyssa Lomuscio, Cara Taggersell and Mikayla Varadi in foil; as well as Christie Griffith and Audrey Barroso in sabre.

Winners of the individual titles for the Cherry and White included repeat champions from 2009. Parker again was tops in foil and sophomore Kamali Thompson in sabre, who defeated teammate Griffith in a well fenced Gold Medal bout. Also competing in the Individual Tournament were Danielle Jones, Sam Pascarelli and Nicola Horscroft who both were in the semi-finals in foil, sabre and epee respectively.

Up next for the Owls are the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships, which will be hosted by Drew University on Saturday, March 13th. Qualification to NCAA Nationals, hosted by Harvard University on March 25th-28th will be made based on the results from Regionals in addition to each fencer's regular season record.
