Men's Crew Advances Three Boats To Knecht Cup Finals

COLLINGSWOOD, N.J - It was a banner day for the Temple men's crew team on the Cooper River Saturday at the Knecht Cup as all three of its competing boats advanced to Sunday's finals.
The 19th-ranked TU Varsity 8 won its heat with the fastest time of day (5:51.59). The Owls boat, comprised of Pat Curran (stroke), Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Brendan Cunningham (5-seat), Mike Mirabella (4-seat), Aaron Heyde (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (bow) and Don Norris (cox), narrowly defeating Marietta (5:52.12) who posted the second fastest time among 19 competing crews.
The Owls V8 won its semifinal, beating virginia by 1,76 seconds to qualify for Sunday's grand final (2:00 p.m.).
Temple's 2nd Varsity 8, comprised of Steve Brady (stroke), Scott Waters (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Joe Bellesheim (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), Maciej Grudzien (2-seat), Chris McCann (bow) and Sam Scimeca (cox), finished second by a mere .17 seconds to Virginia to advance to the grand final Sunday (12:30 p.m.).
The Owls' Varsity 4, comprised of Jimmy Barr (stroke), Mike Vanassche (3-seat), Djordje Vilmanovic (2-seat), Kevin Nally (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox) won heat in a time of 6:52.08 with Philadelphia U (6:55.96) placing second. The grand final will take place Sunday at 10:20 a.m.
Temple will also have two boats in the 2nd Varsity 4 final which races at 9:10 a.m.
