Owls vie for third place on Sunday
MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Temple men's tennis team's quest for an Atlantic 10 championship was ended abruptly by George Washington on Saturday, April 17, in Monroeville, Pa. The top-seeded Colonials handed the Owls a 4-1 loss to drop TU into the consolation bracket.
GW claimed the doubles point with wins at the second and third flights. Filip Rams and Dmitry Vizhunov had put the Cherry & White in position to earn the point with their 8-2 win at number one. After George Washington took the number three match, 8-3, it came down to Ugur Atalay and Richard Blumenfeld, who just got by Mansur Gishkaev and Stanislav Stekolshikov in a 9-8 (4) tiebreak second flight.
In singles play, Temple picked up its point with a win at number one. Filip Rams took his first flight match over Atalay, 6-1, 6-1. That was the only win the Owls could muster, however, and GW came away with the 4-1 victory.
TU will face the loser of the #2 Xavier vs. #3 Duquesne match, being played this afternoon, for third place at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Owls defeated Xavier earlier in the year and dropped a 4-3 decision to Duquesne.
