Pitchers Dual Over First Six As Baseball Falls To Duquesne, 6-3

Mongiardini holds Dukes to one run over six
Box Score
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It was a pitcher's dual over the first six innings of Saturday's middle game of the Temple baseball team's conference series at Duquense, as only the Dukes were able to post one run in the third off of redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini. With the Owls tying the game in the top of the seventh, the Dukes answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good and defeat the Owls 6-3.
Mongiardini (0-11) was cruising over the first two-thirds of the ball game, allowing seven hits and just one run. His counterpart was solid as well, as DU's Paul Bugajski (1-4) let up just three hits and no runs over the same span.
Duquesne grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third, using back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases to pick up a run on a fielder's choice, the second out of the inning. Mongiardini worked out of the jam by striking out the final batter of the frame.
Three straight scoreless innings from both hurlers kept the bats quiet until the top of the seventh, when the Owls tied the game on one swing of the bat from junior Ryan Ferguson (1-4, HR, 2 RBI). Ferguson led of the inning with a solo home run to left field to knot the game at 1-1.
The tie would not last, however, as the Dukes came back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good. The rally came on two outs, as Mongiardini struck out the lead off hitter and secured a line out after giving up a single. Redshirt-freshman Steve Visnic came on in the eighth for Mongiardini, retiring the first three batters he faced.
Temple did not let up, rallying for one run in the eighth and ninth innings. Sophomore Jabair Khan plated in the eighth for TU, scoring on a groundout from Ferguson. In the ninth, the Owls rallied with two outs as senior Tony Jusino singled and eventually scored on an error to move the final score to 6-3.
Junior Byron McKoy went three-for-four on the day, extending his conference and overall hit streak to 15 games.
The Owls are now 11-36, 7-16 in Atlantic 10 play while Duquesne moves to 15-37, 9-14.
The series wraps up tomorrow, with game time being changed to 1:00 p.m.
