ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Behind a strong outing from redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini and a three-RBI day from junior Adrian Perez, the Temple baseball team picked up a 6-3 win over St. Bonaventure in game two Friday afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
Mongiardini (1-11) let up just two earned runs over seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four. In the final start of his Temple career, the Toms River, N.J. native showed tremendous poise, keeping the Bonnies scoreless over the first three.
The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third, as Perez (2-5, HR, 3 RBI) jacked a two-run homer to left center after a walk to junior Byron McKoy (3-3, 2 2B, RBI).
Three more in the fourth gave the Owls the lead for good. Junior Ben Flanary led off with his 10th double of the season, advancing to third on a nicely placed sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jabair Khan. After McKoy reached base by being hit by a pitch, Perez pushed a single to right center to score Flanary and move McKoy to second. Junior Ryan Ferguson plated McKoy with a single to right, while Perez would score on a double from redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak.
With the Owls up 5-0, the Bonnies cut into the lead with one in the fourth, fifth and seventh.
Temple picked up an insurance run in the top of the eight to put the score at 6-3, but it would not be needed as senior Ryan Thomas entered in the bottom of the frame for Mongiardini.
Thomas sat down the Bonnies in order in the eighth, allowing a single to the lead off batter in the ninth but securing a successful double play ball and a groundout to save his third game of the season.
The Owls' season wraps up Saturday as they look for a series sweep in game three at St. Bonaventure, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
