AMBLER, Pa. – It took three innings of extra play to determine the outcome Tuesday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field, as a four-run 12th inning propelled Delaware past the Temple baseball team 9-6. Juniors Ryan Ferguson and Ben Flanary each went four-for-five in the lengthy contest.
Temple opened the game with a two-run first, sparked by a leadoff single by junior Byron McKoy. After stealing second, McKoy advanced to third on passed ball and scored on a successful double play. Ferguson starting things back up with a single, advancing on a throwing error and scoring on a single from sophomore Taylor Juran.
After two scoreless innings of work from redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini, the Blue Hens took two from Owls' reliever redshirt-freshman Steve Visnic in the third. With one man on, Ryan Cuneo hit a towering home run to right field to knot the game at 2-2.
The Owls took a three run 5-2 lead with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Back-to-back doubles from Ferguson and redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak started the TU fifth, and a single from Juran would plate both.
In the sixth, Flanary led off with a double to right-center field, eventually scoring after a hit-batsman, a single from junior Adrian Perez, and a walk to Ferguson.
The Blue Hens answered with identical tallies in the seventh and eighth to tie the game up, forcing extras.
Owls' senior Ryan Thomas pitched a three scoreless from the ninth to eleventh innings, matched by the work of UD's Kyle Thomas and Nick Stampone.
The game broke open in the top of the 12th, as Delaware put up four runs on three hits and an error to take the lead at 9-5.
One run was all the Owls would manage on a short-lived two out rally, as the final score moved to 9-6.
Temple falls to 8-32 on the season while Delaware evens up at 21-21.
The Owls travel to Rutgers on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
