Men's Crew Qualifies Five Boats For Saturday's Dad Vail Races

5.7.10 | Men's Crew

#19 Varsity 8 had to go through reps to advance

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew team had all five of its boats advance to Saturday's competition at the 72 Annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. The Owls' 19th-ranked Varsity 8, the second seed in the field, had to do so by way of the repechage.

"It was a good day as all of our boats qualified," Temple head coach Gavin White said. "I was a little disappointed that the Varsity 8 did not qualify in their heat, but when I saw they had the third fastest time (among all boats) on the day it made me feel better. We still have a good chance to win it tomorrow."

The Owls Varsity 8, comprised of Pat Curran (stroke), Nenad Ninkovic (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Scott Waters (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Brendan Cunningham (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), John Masterson (bow) and Don Norris (cox), finished third in its heat, posting a time of 5:47.52. Delaware, rowing from lane one, finished in 5:41.98 with Brock (5:44.39) edging Temple for second to automatically qualify for Saturday's semifinals.

Rowing in the reps, the Owls had no trouble, winning by four seconds over Army to earn their spot in the semifinals.

Temple's Junior Varsity 8, comprised of James Barr (stroke), Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Aaron Heyde (5-seat), Djordje Vilmanovic (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), John Boehm (2-seat), Mike VanAssche (bow) and Matt Sbei (cox), won a tight race in its defense of its title. The Owls, which rowed in a time of 6:18.60, edged Marietta (6:19.90) and Jacksonville (6:20.68) to advance to Saturday's final.

Temple Freshman/Novice 4, comprised of Mike Mirabella (stroke) Kevin Nally (3-seat), Maciej Grudzian (2-seat), Richard Ehmer (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox), dominated its heat, defeating second place NY Maritime by 14 seconds.

The Owls' Varsity 4, Steve Brady (stroke), Chris McCann (3-seat), Ryan Martin (2-seat), Alex Klein (bow) and Nick Palestro (cox), placed second by just under five seconds to Milwaukee to advance to the semifinals.

Temple's pair of senior Bradford Long and junior Nick Contino placed third in its heat behind Penn State and Stetson with the top three advancing to the semifinals.

Due to a weather forecast of high sustained and gusting winds tomorrow afternoon, Saturday's Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Schedule has been modified. There will be compressed Semifinal start times and earlier Final start times. For complete schedule information go to www.dadvail.org.
