Filip Rams takes flight championships at both singles and doubles
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Temple men's tennis team got the 2010-11 season underway with its first tournament of the fall at the Navy Invitational on September 10-12. The Owls squared off against St. Bonaventure on Friday, Niagara on Saturday and the host team on Sunday in the non-team scoring event.
Junior captain Filip Rams carried his impressive play from a year ago into the event, going undefeated in singles play at the first flight, not dropping a set on the weekend. Rams also teamed up with classmate Dmitry Vizhunov at number one doubles for the Cherry and White, winning all three matches. For their efforts, Rams and Vizhunov were the flight champions at number one doubles, while Rams claimed the title at first singles.
Vizhunov also had a successful weekend in singles play, winning two of his three matches while playing at number four.
Also impressing on the first weekend was sophomore Mansur Gishkaev. After not playing a singles match higher than the fourth flight a year ago, Gishkaev posted a 2-1 record at second singles, including a super-tiebreaker victory against his St. Bonaventure opponent.
