Volleyball's Elyse Burkert Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple volleyball freshman Elyse Burkert was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after strong performances last week at Rider and the Montana Invitational. George Washington's Lauren Whyte and Xavier's Claire Paszkiewicz were named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.

Burkert was named to the Montana Invitational All-Tournament Team after posting 39 kills, 24 digs and four blocks during Temple's three-match weekend in Missoula, Mont. The Richardson, Texas, native led the Owls with 16 kills versus the host team and tied for the team lead with 14 kills against North Dakota.

Prior to entering the tournament, Burkert opened the week with her first career double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs in Temple's 3-0 sweep of Rider. She finished the week hitting a .232 clip with 49 kills and 36 digs.

Also nominated for the A-10 weekly awards was Temple senior Ariel Pierre who had an outstanding week defensively. The libero averaged 4.75 digs per set over the Owls' three matches. She recorded two 20+ dig performances, leading the team with 24 digs against Utah State and an even more impressive 29 digs vs. Montana.
