Stangl and Mavrina make it to consolation final in singles play

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's women's tennis team opened the 2010 fall season with competition at the 14^th Annuals Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational on September 24-26, 2010. The event was hosted by the University of Penn.

In the singles main draw, senior Theresa Stangl earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jessie Rubin of Binghamton to advance to the next round. Also winning her opening round match was freshman Jordan Batey with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory against Princeton's Sarah Hoffman. Classmate Yana Mavrina earned a bye into the second round.

In the second round, Mavrina came up against a tough foe in Monica Chow from Princeton, falling in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Stangl dropped a 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision to Princeton's Ellen Brett, while Batey fell to Cornell's Ryann Young, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Mavrina and Stangl ran the table in the consolation bracket, both making it to the consolation finals with 4-0 records in the back draw. The pair did not play the final match against each other.

In doubles action, Christine Clermont and Stangl paired up to defeat the doubles team of Lauren Bridges from Penn and Diana Shapoval of Columbia, 8-3. The duo came up against a solid pair in Alexa Ely and Connie Hsu in the second round, falling 8-1.
