Game Notes vs. Saint Joseph's
PHILADELPHIA - Looking to remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10, the Temple women's basketball team will face city rival Saint Joseph's as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The Owls (11-6, 3-0) take on the Hawks (11-6, 1-2) at 5:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The Temple men will face Big 5 rival Penn at 7:30 p.m. The women's game is not a Big 5 contest, as that meeting will be Feb. 23 at Saint Joseph's.
Temple has won four straight and is undefeated in Atlantic 10 play at 3-0. The Owls are coming off two dominating wins last week against Rhode Island (81-34) and Fordham (71-28).
Junior Kristen McCarthy, the reigning Big 5 Player of the Week, needs just four points to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career.
Saint Joseph's is 11-6 overall, as is Temple, but the Hawks are just 1-2 in A-10 play after recent home losses to #8 Xavier and Charlotte. Junior guard Michelle Baker leads the team with 13.9 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Temple and Saint Joseph's are meeting for the 69th time since the city rivals began playing each other in 1938. Although Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 39-30, the Owls have won 15 of the last 16 including the last nine straight. The last few games have proven extremely competitive, with Temple winning 58-55 in overtime last year at home and then winning another narrow, 58-56 decision at Saint Joseph's. Today's match-up is A-10 only, as the Big 5 game will take place Feb. 23 at Hagan Arena.
SILENCING OF THE RAMS
In back-to-back battles of Owls vs. Rams last week, the outcome was no contest. Temple tied its season-high with 81 points while holding the Rhode Island Rams to just 34 points, tying the largest margin of victory (47 points) since 1984.
Going on the road to face the Fordham Rams, the Owls once again left no doubt, jumping out to a 15-0 lead and going on to a 71-28 win. Fordham's 28 points were the lowest for a Temple opponent since 1984.
LOOKING FOR THREE GRAND
One Owl has already reached 1,000 career points this season, and two more are close behind. Junior Kristen McCarthy stands just four points away from 1,000, with 996 points. Senior Qwedia Wallace has scored 963 points, and junior Shey Peddy reached the mark in December.
UNDER PRESSURE
The Owls have proven their ability in close games this season, winning all three of their games that were decided by three points or less. Recently, at Charlotte, Temple erased a six-point deficit with five minutes remaining. Down one with under a minute left, Qwedia Wallace went through traffic to make a layup and put the Owls up. She then stole the ball on Charlotte's next possession and went 2-of-2 at the free throw line to ice the win after being fouled.
BELL RINGS UP 22
Satoria Bell came off the bench in Temple's 81-60 win vs. Akron to lead the Owls with a game and season-high 22 points. She hit 6-of-11 from the field including 4-of-7 three's, and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Bell also led the team and recorded a season high with seven rebounds.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable of scoring from beyond the arc and is averaging 6.9 three's per game (3rd in the A-10). The Owls sank 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 four other times (at #13/13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio and vs. Akron).
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 11th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 13.9 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so five times already this year, with a season-low of seven vs. #7 Ohio State.
BALANCED ATTACK
With three players averaging between 11 and 13 points per game and two others at 6.4 and 8.6 ppg, the Owls have been very balanced offensively. Over 17 games, six different players have led or tied for the team lead in scoring.
FOUR BIG 5 WEEKLY HONORS
Temple has earned four Big 5 Player of the Week honors so far this season. Qwedia Wallace took the title after a 32-point outing vs. #7 Ohio State and Shey Peddy earned the honor after strong performances in wins vs. Rutgers and at Auburn. Kristen McCarthy is this week's honoree after averaging 14.5 ppg in two wins last week. She also earned the honor the previous week after scoring 22 points at Charlotte.
OWLS RISING
After three years of finishing higher than predicted in the Atlantic 10, the Owls have been picked to finish third in the standings this year. Temple was picked fifth in 2009-10, and went on to tie for second. Defending champion Xavier is the league's top pick this season, while Dayton edged out Temple for second place.
