ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by first place finishes from seniors Miles Dryden and Emmanual Freeland and junior Travis Mahoney, the Temple men's track & field team placed second at the Navy Open, Saturday afternoon at Wesley A. Brown Field House. Dryden took top honors in the long jump and Mahoney the 3000m, while Freeland stole the show in the 60m and 200m.
Temple (135.5) placed second to host Navy (174), and beat out Big East foe Rutgers (129) and Atlantic 10 opponent Rhode Island (113.50).
Dryden's mark of 22-10.50 was nearly good enough for IC4A qualifying marks. Two Owls also placed second in their respective field events. Senior Bob Keogh continues to fuel Temple in the weight throw, as he took silver with a heave of 57-02.00. Freshman Gabe Pickett has shown consistency in the triple jump, taking second with a leap of 47-07.00.
Freeland cruised to a season-best in the 60m dash, clocking in a 7.00. Dryden placed second to his teammate in the race, running a time of 7.05. Freeland then went on to win the 200m with an IC4A qualifying time of 21.94.
Mahoney also nabbed IC4A qualifying marks, running the 3000m in a first place time of 8:23.72 to top teammate Eddie Penetar for the school-record. Junior Alan Harding fared well in the 400m for the Owls, running a time of 49.78 for third place.
Up next for the Owls is a trip to State College, Pa., where they will compete in the Penn State National on January 28-29.
