PHILADELPHIA
- The ninth-ranked Temple women's fencing team hosted the Philadelphia Invitational in McGonigle Hall on Sunday, in the the Owls' first team competition of the 2010-11 season. Visiting teams included seventh-ranked Northwestern, eighth-ranked Penn, Cornell, Duke, UNC, Haverford, Sacred Heart, Johns Hopkins, NJIT, and Drew.

The day started with a narrow 12-15 loss to #7 Northwestern. Temple rebounded by rattling off four straight wins over Haverford (18-9), Cornell (17-10), Sacred Heart (23-4), and Johns Hopkins (20-7). The sabre squad led the way, winning all five meets, including two 9-0 shutouts (Haverford, Sacred Heart).

Individually the team was led by junior Kamali Thompson (8-0) who went undefeated on the day in sabre, continuing what is shaping into a very strong season, hot off a national gold medal performance in Dallas, TX last week. Junior Alyssa Lomuscio (8-1) and freshman Epiphany Georges (8-1) were nearly as good for the foil squad. Senior Grace Wu (9-5) and Nicola Horscroft (7-3) led epee, while team captain senior Audrey Barroso (8-2) paired with Thompson on the sabre squad.

"This was a good start to the dual meet season." said Coach Bradley Baker. "For the freshmen this was a first experience with the format and they seemed to adjust to it quickly. Throughout the day the team worked well together providing support to each other and working on strategies to attack each opponent. Individually we had several players show a good ability to progress from meet to meet, take correction, and integrate the changes into their game."

Temple returns to action next Saturday at the Penn State Invitational, with meets scheduled against UNC, Duke, #8 Penn, Drew, and defending NCAA champions, #2 Penn State.
