Conn's First Half Goal Enough For Murphy, Owls To Shut Out GW, 1-0

AMBLER, Pa. – Senior Niki Conn put the Owls on the board and in the lead for good, when junior Jourdan Brill set her up to beat George Washington's Lindsay Rowe with a shot from five yards out in the 29th minute to give Temple a 1-0 lead. Temple's defensive unit put up one of its toughest outings of the season to maintain the narrow lead and secure redshirt junior Tara Murphy's third shutout victory of the season.
“This win is huge,” head coach Matt Gwilliam said. We bounced back and rebounded well, and I'm proud of the group effort.”
Junior Adriana Moya and senior Sierra Smidinger came into the game tied for the Colonials' team lead in scoring, but Temple's defense found a way to shield them and keep them from being a factor in Sunday's contest.
Moya had two shots, one of which landed on goal only to be robbed by Murphy, while Smidinger was held shotless.
George Washington outshot the Owls 12-8, but did not have any significant scoring chances. Murphy made stops on all four shots that came her way in order to pitch the shutout in goal.
Conn finished with a game-high three shots. With her goal in the first half, Conn tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season to boost her season point total to nine points.
“This was the best game I saw out of this team mentally," Gwilliam said. "They came together, they focused on the task at hand and they didn't let distractions in…Each individual did their job and that led to the collective.”
The Owls improve to 1-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference play helping them to improve to 4-9-0 on the year. Temple will get back to work when it begins a three-game road swing on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. when it takes on city-rival Saint Joseph's.
