Game Notes vs. Northeastern (PDF)
PHILADELPHIA - The first in what will be a six-game road swing for Temple women's basketball takes the team to Northeastern for a 7:00 p.m. match-up on Tuesday, Nov. 15. For fourth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza and senior Shey Peddy, who are natives of the Roxbury in Boston, the game will be a "Homecoming" and the Owls may find a decent-sized home crowd at Solomon Court.
Northeastern will have a live webcast of the game HERE, as well as live audio HERE and live stats HERE.
THE OPENING TIP
•Temple used an extraordinary defensive effort to defeat Miami (OH) 70-36 in the season opener, out-rebounding the RedHawks 49-32, forcing 26 turnovers while committing just 13 and holding Miami to 27.9 percent shooting from the field (12-of-43).
•Both Head Coach Tonya Cardoza and senior Shey Peddy hail from Roxbury in Boston, making the game a “Homecoming” of sorts for the Owls.
•The Owls, coming off a 24-9 season, return two of their top three leading scorers from last season in seniors Shey Peddy (team-best 14.1 ppg) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2 ppg)...Both were named to the 2011-12 Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team.
•Tonya Cardoza, the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, returns for her fourth season with a current record of 71-28.
•Both McCarthy and Peddy eclipsed the 1,000-point mark last year, with McCarthy now at 1,217 for her career (11th all-time at Temple) and Peddy at 1,334 in her career (including two years at DI Wright State).
•Last year's team shattered the all-time three-point record for a season, making 216 three-pointers...The previous record was 172 in 2009-10.
•Northeastern is coming off a season-opening, 83-53 loss to Eastern Michigan (out of the MAC)...The Huskies were 8-22 overall in 2010-11 and return three starters from that team including two senior guards (Kashaia Cannon and Jamie Conroy) who averaged 10.7 and 10 ppg, respectively...Head coach Daynia LaForce-Mann is in her sixth season with the Huskies.
SERIES HISTORY
Temple and Northeastern are tied 1-1 all-time, but have not faced each other since the 1983-84 season. The Owls won that game, 70-55 at a neutral site tournament. The Huskies earned a 59-56 win the year before at another neutral site.
BREAKOUT GAME FOR BRITTANY LEWIS
Setting career highs in nearly every category during Temple's season-opening win vs. Miami (OH) was junior forward Brittany Lewis. She recorded career highs in points (12), field goals made (5), assists (3), steals (2), blocks (2) and minutes played (37). Prior to Friday's game, the most minutes Lewis had ever played in a collegiate contest was 20.
OWLS RECEIVING VOTES IN BOTH POLLS
The Owls are receiving votes in both national preseason polls; 10 votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and four votes in the AP Poll.
McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On November 4, it was announced that senior Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition.
The 10 finalists will be announced in late January, at which time a national ballot will be available to fans. To learn more, visit the website at www.seniorclassaward.com.
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy set the program's all-time record for steals in a single season last year with 104, recording at least one steal in all but one game. Her 3.2 steals per game ranked second in the A-10 and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Temple did an impressive job taking care of the ball last season, as the Owls averaged just 13.6 turnovers per game to rank sixth among all teams in NCAA Division I. Temple picked up right where it left off last year, committing just 13 turnovers in its season-opening win on Nov. 11.
PRESEASON RESPECT
Kristen McCarthy and Shey Peddy earned A-10 Preseason honors, as both were named to the First Team. Peddy, an A-10 First Team selection last year, led the Owls with 14.1 ppg. McCarthy was an A-10 Second Team selection a year ago and ranked third on the team with 13.2 ppg.
THREE-POINT STREAK
The final game of the 2008-09 season marked the last time Temple did not hit at least one three-pointer as a team. The Owls have now achieved that feat for 68 straight games. The streak very nearly hit snags in two of Temple's games last year- at Saint Joseph's (Feb. 23) and vs. Dayton (March 6), as the now-graduated Qwedia Wallace hit the only three in both games with under a minute left each time.
NOW THE TEAM TO BEAT
After four years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls are finally picked first in the conference in a tie with Dayton. Last season Temple was picked third and ended up second, and two years ago the Owls were picked fifth and went on to tie for second.
