Women's basketball scores a huge 73-57 win in its return home against Auburn
PHILADELPHIA - “It's good to be home.”
That's the adage Temple women's basketball head coach Tonya Cardoza repeated in the wake of her team's 73-57 rout of the Auburn Tigers at the Liacouras Center on Saturday afternoon.
Returning home was a definitely a catalyst for the Owls who logged five straight losses in road games to open their 2011-12 season, including two losses in an appearance at the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas.
Senior Shey Peddy took the Owls under her wing early in the game, recording a (Temple) career-high 27 points and shooting 69 percent from the field.
The motivation behind Peddy's explosive performance on the court was very simple.
“We're tired of losing,” she said.
Last year, the Owls began the season in a similar fashion, with a handful of early losses before unleashing five straight wins in the month of December.
Coach Cardoza hopes for a similar result following today's momentous win.
“We're not thinking about anything else,” Cardoza said. “We just got one win. We're not worried about any opponents now. We're just focusing on ourselves.”
Even so, Cardoza can only hope that home court advantage will prove to be a key factor for the Owls, whose upcoming schedule includes Big 5 foe Villanova, UCLA and the nationally-ranked Duke Blue Devils (#7/6).
“It feels good to be on your home court and have your fans behind you. It's a sense of comfort,” Cardoza said.
“I definitely think that we needed that [today]. Hopefully it will push us in a different direction.”
