Owls look to ride the momentum of a big win vs. Auburn on Dec. 3

PHILADELPHIA - In its last game before a break for finals, the Temple women's basketball team will play host to Kent State on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. The Owls (3-5) will face the struggling Golden Flashes (1-5) and look to ride the momentum of a big, 73-57 win vs. Auburn just a few days ago. Non-Wild Cherry students looking for free men's basketball tickets vs. Duke (Jan. 4) have an opportunity to get those tickets by attending the women's game vs. Kent State.
THE OPENING TIP
•Temple snapped a five-game losing streak with a big, 73-57 win vs. Auburn this past Saturday...The Owls had lost all five games as part of a six-game road swing, and lost the first four by an average of only seven points before suffering a 71-50 loss at #11/12 Rutgers...Temple was within two points in the final minute of three of those losses (#24/25 Ohio St., Northern Illinois and St. John's).
•Shey Peddy was named the A-10 Player of the Week this week after scoring her Temple career high with 27 points vs. Auburn, and leading the Owls with 16 points at #11/12 Rutgers...Peddy averaged 21.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 4.5 steals per game in the two contests.
•Last year's team started with similar struggles, going 2-4 before winning five straight and going on to have a 24-9 season.
•Shey Peddy was recently named to the 2011-12 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year preseason watch list...Peddy was one of 50 Division I student-athletes named to the list.
•Both Kristen McCarthy and Peddy eclipsed the 1,000-point mark last year, with McCarthy now at 1,297 for her career (sixth all-time at Temple) and Peddy at 1,443 in her career (including two years at DI Wright State).
•Kent State comes in at 1-5 overall and has lost its last three straight games...Most recently, the Golden Flashes lost 60-51 at home to the A-10's St. Bonaventure...Trisha Krewson leads Kent State with 12.5 poings per game along with a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game.
SERIES RECORD
Temple and Kent State are meeting for the third time, with Temple holding a 2-0 advantage. The Owls won at home, 74-34 on Dec. 5, 2007, and then earned a 68-63 road win on Dec. 12, 2009. The two teams did not meet last season. Kent State coach Bob Lindsay was coach of the Golden Flashes for the 2007 game, but Temple coach Tonya Cardoza did not arrive until the following season.
OWLS STEP UP IN THE COMMUNITY
The team stepped up in the community of Philadelphia, literally, when the Owls took part in the Philly Stair Climb on Sunday, Dec. 4, to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Pennsylvania's (SOPA's) Philadelphia program also known as T.E.A.M. Philly. The Philly Stair Climb is 53-floor vertical challenge that took place at the BNY Mellon Center downtown. As a team, the Owls raised $1200 for the cause.
PEDDY NAMED A-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shey Peddy was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 5 after scoring her Temple career high 27 points vs. Auburn, and leading the Owls with 16 points at #11/12 Rutgers. Peddy averaged 21.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 4.5 steals per game in the two contests.
McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On November 4, it was announced that senior Kristen?McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition.
The 10 finalists will be announced in late January, at which time a national ballot will be available to fans. To learn more, visit the website at www.seniorclassaward.com.
PRESEASON RESPECT
Kristen McCarthy and Shey Peddy earned A-10 Preseason honors, as both were named to the First Team. Peddy, an A-10 First Team selection last year, led the Owls with 14.1 ppg. McCarthy was an A-10 Second Team selection a year ago and ranked third on the team with 13.2 ppg.
McCARTHY MOVES INTO SIXTH ALL-TIME
With eight points against Auburn on Dec. 3, Kristen McCarthy moved into sixth place all-time at Temple in career scoring, now with 1,297 points. She now needs 33 more points to move into fifth place.
PEDDY NAMED TO NAISMITH WATCH LIST
Shey Peddy has been named to the 2011-12 Naismith Trophy Women's early-season watch list, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The watch list includes the 50 top women's college basketball players from 35 schools around the country, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 college basketball season.
