The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The Owls 18-6, 9-0) have won 11 straight, ranking as their longest win streak since the 2006-07 season. Temple is one of two undefeated teams in the Atlantic 10 along with #7 Xavier, and is averaging 24.2 points per game more than its conference opponents so far.
Temple's top three scorers are about as balanced as it gets, with Shey Peddy at 13.3 ppg followed by Kristen McCarthy at 12.7 ppg and Qwedia Wallace at 12.6 ppg.
La Salle is coming off a 69-54 victory over Fordham followed by a 61-49 win vs. Rhode Island. The Explorers are 8-16 overall and 4-5 in the A-10. Senior Ashley Gale scored 25 points en route to scoring her 1,000th career point against Fordham, and she is currently first on the team and fourth in the A-10 with 18.2 points per game.
SERIES RECORD
Temple is only 18-20 all-time against La Salle, but has dominated since 2001, winning all 12 meetings. Last year Temple won by a score of 55-34 at La Salle, and two years ago the Owls earned a 62-55 home win vs. the Explorers.
WALLACE NEARS 3-POINT RECORD
With 146 three-pointers, Qwedia Wallace is just eight away from tying the all-time career record at Temple. Recent Big 5 Hall of Fame inductee Stacey Smalls holds the record with 154.
OWLS LOOK TO RECLAIM BIG 5 TITLE
After not winning or sharing the Big 5 title for the first time in six years in 2009-10, Temple is looking good this season after avenging its only loss a year ago. The Owls are 2-0 with wins at Villanova on Dec. 19, and at Penn on Jan. 22.
AP VOTES
For the second week in a row and first time since early in the season, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With eight votes the Owls are ranked fifth of the 11 teams not in the top 25.
RPI REPORT
Temple is currently in 50th place in the RPI standings of 343 teams. Despite the Owls' tie with Xavier for first in the A-10, four conference teams rank higher in RPI (Xavier 9, Duquesne 39, Dayton 41, Charlotte 48).
OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.
Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.
TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (44.9 ppg), scoring margin (24.2 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.320), 3-pt pct. defense (.239), blocks (5.4 pg), steals (10.9 pg), turnover margin (+8.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2).
Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (4.0 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is #3 in blocks for league games (1.6 bpg).
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 23 of Temple's 24 games, ranks first in the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game (4.0 in conference games). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high.
Peddy also ranks 20th in NCAA Division I with her 3.0 spg. At 74 steals for the season, she already stands in ninth place on the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.
THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,173 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State. Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,074 points to rank 15th all-time at Temple.
Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 16th with 1,049 points.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 6.9 three's per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 four other times (at #13/13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio and vs. Akron).
Temple's three-point percentage of .359, while ranking just fourth in the A-10, is 18th best in NCAA Division I.
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 8th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 14.0 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so six times already this year, with a season-low of seven vs. #7 Ohio State.
In a somewhat unusual statistical feat, Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in 105 consecutive games.
PEDDY EARNS BACK-TO-BACK A-10 HONORS
Shey Peddy was named both the A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week on Jan. 31 and again on Feb. 7. Peddy paced the Owls to four wins over the two weeks, averaging 19 ppg and 6.8 rpg. She shot 54.5 percent, was 9-for-9 from the FT line, averaged over five assists per game and close to five steals. Peddy scored a season-high 26 points in the Owls' win at Duquesne on Feb. 5, the 10th straight victory for Temple.
STEAMROLLING
Over Temple's 11-game win streak, just three have been by a margin of less than 10 points. Since their three-point win at Charlotte, the Owls have averaged 26.9 more points per game than their eight A-10 opponents.
SCHOOL-RECORD 3-POINT PERCENTAGE
In the game following a program-record 14 three-pointers, the Owls were record-setting once again by draining 9-of-11 from behind the arc in their win vs. Saint Louis on Feb. 2. The 81.8 pct. is the tops all-time, men or women.
THREE-POINT STREAK
The final game of the 2008-09 season marked the last time Temple did not hit at least one three-pointer. The Owls have now achieved that feat for 58 straight games.
