Game Notes vs. GW
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team will go for its 20th win of the season in an Atlantic 10 contest at George Washington (8-16, 3-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Owls (19-6, 10-0) look to stay undefeated in the conference against a GW team that has won three of its last four.
Live stats are available HERE, and subscribers can see a live webcast HERE.
Temple has won 12 straight, ranking as its longest win streak since the 2004-05 season, and is one of two teams atop the A-10 along with #7 Xavier. The Owls are one win away from reaching the 20-win plateau for the eighth straight season. Last year's 25 wins tied for the second-most all-time, with 28 being the record (2004-05).
The Owls' three 1,000 career point-scorers lead the team offensively, with Shey Peddy at 13.4 points per game followed by Kristen McCarthy (13.1 ppg) and Qwedia Wallace (12.6 ppg). Peddy ranks 14th in NCAA Division I (first in the A-10) with 3.1 steals per game, a figure which jumps to 4.0 spg for conference games. With 78 steals this season, she currently ranks seventh all-time in a single season at Temple.
For A-10 games, TU leads the league in nearly every defensive category including blocks and steals, and Temple ranks ninth in NCAA Division I in fewest turnovers per game at 14.0.
George Washington started the season at 5-4 before getting derailed by an 11-game losing streak, but the Colonials have since won three of their last four to stand at 3-7 in the A-10. Junior Tara Booker and sophomore Dani Jackson average 10.4 and 10.2 points per game, respectively, for GW, which also has two other players averaging nine or more points per game.
SERIES RECORD
Although George Washington leads the all-time series 28-21, Temple has won four of the last five contests, including the last three straight. Last year, the Owls won 61-51 at home after earning a 59-49 win on the road the year before.
AP VOTES
For the third week in a row, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With 16 votes the Owls are ranked sixth of the 11 teams not in the top 25.
WALLACE NEARS 3-POINT RECORD
With 147 three-pointers, Qwedia Wallace is just seven away from tying the all-time career record at Temple. Recent Big 5 Hall of Fame inductee Stacey Smalls currently holds the record with 154.
RPI REPORT
Temple is currently 43rd in the RPI standings of 343 teams. Other A-10 teams in the top 50 are Xavier (8), Charlotte (41), Duquesne (46) and Dayton (49).
OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.
Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.
TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (46.7 ppg), scoring margin (22.7 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.329), 3-pt pct. defense (.238), blocks (5.5 pg), steals (11.3 pg) and turnover margin (+7.5).
Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (4.0 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is #4 in blocks for league games (1.6 bpg).
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 24 of Temple's 25 games, ranks first in the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game (4.0 in conference games). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high. Peddy also ranks 14th in NCAA Division I with her 3.0 spg. At 78 steals for the season, she already stands in seventh place on the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.
THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,189 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State. Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,096 points to rank 15th all-time at Temple.
Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 16th with 1,062 points.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 6.8 three's per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 four other times (at #13/13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio and vs. Akron).
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 9th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 14.0 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so six times already this year, with a season-low of seven vs. #7 Ohio State.
In a somewhat unusual statistical feat, Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in 106 consecutive games.
PEDDY EARNS BACK-TO-BACK A-10 HONORS
Shey Peddy was named both the A-10 and Big 5 Player of the Week on Jan. 31 and again on Feb. 7. Peddy paced the Owls to four wins over the two weeks, averaging 19 ppg and 6.8 rpg. She shot 54.5 percent, was 9-for-9 from the FT line, averaged over five assists per game and close to five steals.
Peddy scored a season-high 26 points in the Owls' win at Duquesne on Feb. 5, the 10th straight victory for Temple.
SCHOOL-RECORD 3-POINT PERCENTAGE
In the game following a program-record 14 three-pointers, the Owls were record-setting once again by draining 9-of-11 from behind the arc in their win vs. Saint Louis on Feb. 2. The 81.8 pct. is the tops all-time, men or women.
ONE AWAY FROM 20
At 19 wins, Temple needs just one more to hit 20 wins for the eighth straight season. The Owls started this year at 2-4 but have since gone 17-2. Last year's team tied for the second-most wins in program history with 25.
The Owls have at least five games remaining, but more likely anywhere from 6-10. Temple has already clinched a first round bye for the A-10 Tournament.
