Owls responds with late run, not enough to overcome

Box Score

HIGH POINT, N.C.
- An early lead from High Point was too much for the Temple baseball team to overcome in the series opener, as the Owls fell to the Panthers, 7-2.  Junior Jabair Khan led the way for Temple (3-1) with two hits, while senior Byron McKoy and junior Cameron Green each drove in a run in the final two frames.

Senior Ben White (1-1) had a tough outing in the start, leaving the game after 4.2 innings of work.  White struck out four but struggled with his control, walking two and hitting four batters.  Junior Tyler Horst took over for White and went 2.1 innings, allowing one run while freshman Phil Gianakos threw a scoreless final frame.\

High Point (1-5) starter Cody Allen went seven innings and caused issues for the Owls all afternoon.  Allen struck out 10 hitters to earn the win.

The Owls tried to get things going in the first, as senior Adrian Perez drew a two-out walk and classmate Ryan Ferguson singled to put runners on first and second.  HPU's Allen struck out the next batter in Nikorak to halt any scoring the Owls hoped to do.

High Point picked up two in the bottom of the first on two hits, and after the Owls went down in order in the top of the second, added one more in the bottom half of the frame.

HPU's Allen proved to be a formidable opponent, putting the Owls went down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Khan attempted to get Temple's offense in gear in the third, leading off the inning with a single.  Allen worked his way out of the inning forcing a fly out and a strikeout - on which Khan was caught stealing.

White held the home team scoreless in the third, but High Point sprung for three more runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 6-0.  Horst came on for White in the fifth and worked out of the frame, throwing a scorless sixth inning and giving up one in the seventh.

Green led off the eighth taking one for the team to reach base, advancing on a groundout by senior Ben Flanary.  Green advanced to third on Khan's second hit of the game, then scoring on a sacrifice fly by McKoy.

Gianakos kept the Panthers from increasing their lead in the eighth, sending the home team down in order.  Temple tried to summon a rally in the ninth.  After Perez struck out, Ferguson and Nikorak each reached base on free passes, with Ferguson scoring on a single by Green.  It would be the only run High Point would allow, as they secured the final out on a strike out.

Game two of the series begins at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.  Junior Brant Norlander will be starting for Temple, going against sophomore Jared Avidon of High Point.
