Box Score
TAMPA, Fla. – The Temple softball team exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to post a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Western Michigan in TU's first action of the 2011 season. The Owls faced the Broncos in their first game of the USF Fairfield Inn and Suites Tampa North Tournament on Friday, February 25.
Senior Kristen Marris pitched 5.1 innings for Temple, giving up five hits and three runs for the win. Sophomore Crystal Nyman came in for 1.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief to pick up the save.
Western Michigan got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first. Gracie Barstad got things started with a leadoff single up the middle. She was promptly sacrificed to second, moved up to third on a wild pitch, and came around to score after an illegal pitch.
Marris settled in after the rough first inning and held WMU scoreless for the next two, but her counterpart, Kayla Houston, was also having a solid game and did not give up a hit through the first three innings.
The Broncos struck again in the fourth, taking advantage of a wild pitch, a walk and Temple error in the inning to put another run on the board. The Owls responded in their half of the frame, however, with four runs on three hits and one WMU miscue.
Freshman Sarah Prezioso opened the frame with a walk, and classmate Stephanie Pasquale followed with her first collegiate hit to put runners on first and second. A groundout to the pitcher allowed both runners to advance, and junior Rachel Knable followed with her first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Prezioso.
After junior Meaghan Marley walked to put runners on the corners, junior Christina Sykora delivered a run-scoring double down the left field line. Junior Samantha Schoell followed with a two-run single to right field to give the Owls the 4-2 lead.
Temple scored again in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two Western Michigan errors and a wild pitch in the inning. Marris reached on an error, followed by Prezioso who did the same. Both players advanced on a wild pitch, and Marris was plated when freshman Devynne Nelons reached on a fielder's choice.
WMU also tacked another run on in the top of the sixth to pull within two, but Nyman sat the Broncos down in order in the top of the seventh to save the game.
Temple is 1-0 and will face #16 Missouri at 10:30 a.m. today.
