PHILADELPHIA - It will be a Senior Day Sunday showdown and Fan Appreciation Day in the Liacouras Center as the Temple women's basketball team battles #6 Xavier for the Atlantic 10 regular season championship. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, and will air live on ESPNU. Both the Owls and the Musketeers are undefeated in conference play and are playing for the #1 seed at next weekend's A-10 Tournament.
Fans will win prizes throughout Sunday's game, and the first 500 students will receive a free "BEAT XAVIER" t-shirt.
Much is on the line for both teams, and the day will be extra special for Temple as the Owls honor their three seniors for Senior Day. Danielle Brinkley, Marli Bennett and Qwedia Wallace are playing in their final home game for Temple and will be introduced prior to tip-off.
The Owls (22-6, 13-0) come in with a 15-game winning streak while Xavier (24-2, 13-0) has won 14 in a row. The Musketeers have been ranked in the top 10 all season, while Temple is the seventh team receiving votes below the top 25 in the AP Poll.
Temple has only once gone undefeated in the conference regular season (16-0 in 2004-05), and has just once lost a single game (13-1 in 2006-07). The Owls are coming off a close, 52-49 win at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday that earned the team the outright Philadelphia Big 5 Championship for 2010-11 with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Owls are led by three guards who have all passed the 1,000-career points milestone. Shey Peddy is averaging 13.5 ppg followed closely by Kristen McCarthy at 13.0 ppg and Qwedia Wallace at 12.9 ppg.
Xavier was perfect in A-10 play last year, and this season the Musketeers have been challenged only in their two games against rival Dayton, winning by four in the first and by four in overtime in the second. Seniors Amber Harris and Ta'Shia Phillips both average double-doubles for Xavier, with Harris at 18.6 ppg/10.0 rpg and Phillips at 15.3 ppg/12.3 rpg.
SERIES RECORD
Xavier holds a 12-9 lead all-time against Temple, and the two teams have had a strong rivalry the past few years. The Musketeers ran away from Temple in an 82-69 win during last year's regular season, but a re-match came in the A-10 Tournament final. The Owls erased an early 14-point deficit to eventually force overtime before losing, 57-55. The Musketeers were ranked 13th when the Owls last defeated them, at home on Feb. 25, 2009, 74-65. Xavier has not lost a game to an A-10 opponent since that defeat.
OWLS CLAIM OUTRIGHT BIG 5 TITLE
The 2010-11 Big 5 title is Temple's alone as the Owls edged Saint Joseph's 52-49 on Feb. 23, completing a perfect 4-0 sweep of the city series this season. Last year was the first time in six seasons that Temple had NOT won or shared the title, and the year before the Owls shared the honor with Saint Joseph's.
The Big 5 title is Temple's ninth overall and eighth outright since the Big 5 tradition was established for women's basketball in 1979-80.
PAST ATLANTIC 10 SUCCESS
It has been three years since Temple won the regular season A-10 title (shared with GW in 2007-08), and five since the Owls captured a tournament title (2005-06). All-time, Temple has won or shared four regular season titles including three that were just East Division when the A-10 was split. In the years the A-10 has not been split, Temple has never won the regular season title outright.
WALLACE NEARS 3-POINT RECORD
With 153 three-pointers, Qwedia Wallace is just one away from tying the all-time career record at Temple. Recent Big 5 Hall of Fame inductee Stacey Smalls currently holds the record with 154.
TEMPLE VS. THE POLLS
Temple is 12-92 all-time against ranked opponents, but has won seven in the last six years. The Owls are 7-22 since the 2004-05 season. Their most recent win vs. a ranked opponent was Feb. 25, 2009 against #13 Xavier.
AP VOTES
For the fourth week in a row, Temple is receiving votes in the AP Poll. With 19 votes the Owls are ranked seventh of the 12 teams not in the top 25.
ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
Surprisingly for a team that had never been a real three-point threat, this year's squad has proven very capable behind the arc and is averaging 6.7 threes per game (2nd in the A-10). The Owls sank 14 vs. Richmond, 12 vs. #7 Ohio State and made 10 five other times (at #13 UCLA, vs. Rutgers, at Ohio, vs. Akron and at GW).
THREE-POINT STREAK
The final game of the 2008-09 season marked the last time Temple did not hit at least one three-pointer. The Owls have now achieved that feat for 62 straight games. The streak very nearly hit a snag in TU's most recent game at Saint Joseph's, as Qwedia Wallace hit the only trey with 25 seconds left in the game.
PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy, who has recorded at least one steal in 27 of Temple's 28 games, ranks second in the A-10 with 3.0 steals per game (3.5 in conference games). Peddy recorded an impressive eight steals in the Owls' win at UMass, marking her career high. Peddy also ranks 19th in NCAA Division I with her 3.0 spg. At 83 steals for the season, she already stands in a tie for sixth on the all-time single-season steals list at Temple.
THREE GRAND
An impressive three Owls (Temple's three leading scorers) have reached the 1,000-point milestone this season. Junior Shey Peddy was first, hitting the mark on Dec. 21. Her current 1,232 points include two years playing at Division I Wright State.
Junior Kristen McCarthy was next, reaching the milestone in a win vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 19, and has now scored 1,133 points to rank 13th all-time at Temple.
Senior Qwedia Wallace led the Owls with 21 points in a win at UMass on Jan. 26 to hit exactly 1,000 for her career. She was the 19th player in the history of the program to achieve the feat, and now ranks 16th with 1,107 points.
RECORD-SETTING WIN
Temple's 89-36 win at George Washington on Feb. 16 was impressive from beginning to end. After going down 0-2 the Owls scored 28 unanswered points, eventually winning by 53 to record the second-largest margin of victory in the history of the program.
The Owls achieved a rare feat with six players scoring in double figures. They scored a season-high 52 points in the first half, tied their season high with 26 assists and tied their season low with seven turnovers all while winning their 13th straight game and 20th overall.
EIGHTH-STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASON
Temple has now reached 20 wins for the eighth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 years. The Owls started this year at 2-4 but have since gone 20-2. Last year's team tied for the second-most wins in program history with 25.
OWLS SET 3-POINT SINGLE GAME RECORD
With 14 three-pointers in their win vs. Richmond on Jan. 29, the Owls surpassed the previous program record of 13, set a year ago. Kristen McCarthy was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in the win, but it was senior Danielle Brinkley who was the hero.
Coming in off the bench with a previous career high of three points, Brinkley sank two three's to both tie the previous record and break it.
TOPS IN A-10 DEFENSE
In the conference-only stats, Temple is dominating in the defensive categories. The Owls are first in scoring defense (46.5 ppg), scoring margin (23.6 ppg), field goal pct. defense (.326), 3-pt pct. defense (.252), blocks (5.5 pg), steals (11.0 pg) and turnover margin (+7.9).
Shey Peddy is #1 in steals for league games (3.5 spg) and Victoria Macaulay is fourth in blocks for league games (1.6 bpg).
LOW TURNOVER RATE
The Owls rank 8th in the nation for fewest turnovers at 13.7 per game. After just once recording fewer than 10 turnovers in 2009-10, Temple has done so seven times already this year, with season-lows of seven vs. #7 Ohio State and recently at GW.
In a somewhat unusual statistical feat, Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in 109 consecutive games.
OWLS RISING
After three years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls were picked to finish third this year and will once again better that standing. Temple was picked fifth in 2009-10 and went on to tie for second.
