PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Shey Peddy scored a game and season-high 26 points to lead the Temple women's basketball team to its 10th straight win, a 61-52 victory at Duquesne (19-4, 6-2) on Saturday afternoon. The Owls' streak is their longest in four years, and they remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10 at 8-0.
Temple (17-6, 8-0) handed Duquesne just its fourth loss of the season, and the Dukes received 24 votes in this week's AP Poll. The Owls got nine points from BJ Williams and eight points along with eight rebounds from Natasha Thames, with both players coming off the bench.
Samantha Pollino led Duquesne with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, while Vanessa Abel scored 15 points for the Dukes and went 3-of-4 behind the arc.
The Owls started slow in what turned out to be a low-scoring first half, and made just one field goal in the first seven minutes. Temple was down early, 9-4, before Peddy scored all seven points of a 7-0 run that gave the Owls an 11-9 lead.
After ties at 11 and 13, Peddy went on score her second and third fastbreak layups of the contest to put the Owls up by four, but Temple's largest lead of the half was just five.
The Dukes got to 15 points just after the midway point of the half, but scored just one field goal and five total points the rest of the way as Temple took a 25-20 lead into the break.
Peddy led all players with 14 first-half points. Shooting was poor at both ends, with Duquesne barely edging the Owls at 30 percent from the field compared to Temple's 29 percent.
Peddy hit her third trey of the game on Temple's first possession of the second half to give the Owls their largest lead of eight, but it was short-lived as Duquesne went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead since early in the contest.
Kristen McCarthy stopped the run with an offensive rebound and layup, and from that point neither team led by more than two for a five-minute stretch.
With yet another fastbreak layup at the 10-minute mark, Peddy gave the Owls a 37-34 lead. Temple went on to lead by eight, 51-43 on a jumper from Natasha Thames with five minutes remaining.
The Owls held Duquesne without a field goal for nearly six minutes, but did send the Dukes to the line for eight attempts over that stretch where Duquesne scored five points.
The Dukes were forced to foul in the final two minutes but were never able to narrow the margin to fewer than five. Peddy gave the Owls a 12-point lead, their largest lead of the contest, in the final minute but a three-pointer from Duquesne's Pollino put the final margin at nine.
Temple will continue its road swing with a game at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
