Norlander picks up second win over 6.2 innings of work

Box Score

AMBLER, Pa.
- Behind a strong performance on the hill from junior Brant Norlander and a pair of three-RBI days from senior Ryan Ferguson and redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak, the Temple baseball team cruised past New York Tech, 14-4, Saturday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.  Temple, now on an eight-game winning streak, improves to 11-5 while New York Tech falls to 1-8.

Norlander (2-0) went 6.2 innings striking out seven batters and allowing just four runs to earn the win.  He turned it over to redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic for 1.1 innings of work, followed by junior Tyler Horst for the final frame.

Ferguson and Nikorak led an Owls' offense that yet again posted double-digit runs, the eighth time this season that has occured.  Ferguson went a scorching four-for-five with a double at the plate and Nikorak was three-for-four, while both players scored twice.

Freshman John Duggan took the loss for New York Tech, giving up five runs and 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work.

The Bears actually took the first lead of the game, scoring one run in the second before the Owls tied it up in the third.  Junior Jabair Khan ripped the first of two doubles on the day to lead off the frame, followed by a walk to senior Byron McKoy.  Khan would be out on a fielder's choice hit by senior Adrian Perez, but a single to center by Ferguson plated McKoy.

Temple pulled away in the fifth, posting four runs on four hits in the frame.  McKoy led off the inning with a walk, moveing to second on a single by Perez.  A single by Ferguson loaded the bases for Nikorak, who drove in two on a single.  Junior Taylor Juran got a run home on a groundout, while senior Ben Flanary doubled to plate Nikorak and give the Owls a 4-1 lead.

The Owls moved their total to double-digits in the sixth, posting six runs on seven hits to go up 10-1.  Khan ripped his second double of the day to start things off, with a walk to McKoy putting runners on first and second.  Perez put down a bunt single to load the bases, setting things up for Ferguson who knocked a two-RBI double.  Nikorak singled to plate Ferguson and keep the rally going.  Freshman Will Remillard singled to score Nikorak, stealing second to put himself in scoring position.  A single from Flanary plated Remillard, while a double by junior Cameron Green scored the final run of the frame.

Norlander cruised not allowing any runs over the third to the sixth innings.  He let three go back in the seventh, and was pulled in the frame.  His offense got the runs back for him in the eighth, scoring three more to put the final score at 14-4.

Visnic got the Owls out of trouble in the seventh, throwing a scoreless eighth and handing things over to Horst, who pitched a one-hit ninth to secure the win.

Temple remains at home for the final game of the weekend against St. Peter's on Sunday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m.
