AMBLER, Pa. – Freshman Devynne Nelons and sophomore Gina Sciarrone each homered in a 10-5 game two win over Dayton for the Temple softball team on Sunday, March 20. The Owls and Flyers met for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader, with Dayton claiming the first game of the twinbill, 13-4.
In the opener, the Cherry and White held a 4-2 lead to open the fifth inning, but that is when the Dayton bats came alive. The Flyers proceeded to score five runs in the fifth, and then six more in the top of the seventh, to put the game away. Dayton hit five of its seven homeruns in the game in those two frames.
Lauren Nacke and Megan Barrett each collected two hits in the game, all of them home runs. Barrett's second dinger of the game was a grand-slam in the seventh to finish up the scoring.
Senior Kristen Marris took the loss, giving up eight hits and six runs in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Kylie Kristovich did not fare much better in her 2.2 innings of relief, giving up six hits and seven runs. At the plate, Marris was 2-for-4 with her first triple of the season.
In game two, four more balls left the park, but this time two of them belonged to Temple. Nelons hit a solo shot to open the fourth inning, and the Owls went on to score three more runs on three more hits in the frame. TU scored four again in the fifth, building a 9-2 lead.
Dayton threatened to get back in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, one of those a leadoff round-tripper from Kathleen Maloof. But freshman Brooklin White kept her composure and eventually got out of the frame with the lead still intact.
The Owls added one more run in the bottom of the sixth for good measure.
Three Temple players had two hits apiece in the contest, including junior Samantha Schoell with two doubles. Marris followed up the first game with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with a double.
White got the win, going all 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and five runs.
Temple is 10-12 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Cherry and White are back in action again on Tuesday, March 22, in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at UMBC. Dayton is 10-10, 2-2 A-10.
