Owls rally to tie game in fifth, errors prove costly late
Box Score
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Temple baseball team had an early lead and then rallied from down one in the third to tie the game in the fifth, but a costly five-run seventh by Xavier handed the Owls a 10-4 loss, Friday afternoon in the series opener at Hayden Field. Temple's win streak of 10-games was snapped with the defeat, putting the Owls a 13-6, 0-1 in Atlantic 10 play while Xavier improves to 15-8, 1-0 in A-10.
Senior Ben White (3-3) looked confident in the start, striking out a season-high 10 batters and allowing just three earned runs over 6.1 innings pitched to take the loss. The Temple defense was of no help to White today, posting four misplays - two in each of the Xavier scoring innings. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic gave up a single run over the final 1.2 innings.
Senior Byron McKoy spearheaded the Owls' offense, going two-for-five with two RBI. Senior Adrian Perez also chipped in two hits, ripping a homer to account for one run. Freshman Will Remillard joined the pair with two hits.
Earning the win for Xavier was redshirt-sophomore Tyler Koors, who gave up four runs over seven innings of work. He allowed 10 hits to the Owls, who were held hitless over the final two frames by sophomore Marcus Kuykendoll and redshirt-junior Nate Musch.
Temple jumped out to a 3-0 by the top of the second, posting one in the first and two in the second. Perez accounted for the run in the first, taking a pitch over the left field fence for a 1-0 TU lead. Remillard started off the second with a one-out single to right center, moving to second after junior Cameron Green was hit by a pitch. Junior Jabair Khan singled to load the bases, setting up McKoy for a two-RBI single to center which moved the score to 3-0 in favor of the Owls.
White held Xavier scoreless over the first two innings, giving up just two hits and striking out four over that time. He ran into trouble in the third, and was set back by two errors in the field by his defense. A walk to the first batter led to a homer by XU senior John McCambridge, but misplays extended the inning allowing Xavier to plate two more runs and take a 4-3 lead.
The Owls' ace was unphased, though, and went right back at it to hold the Musketeers scoreless over the next third of the game. The Temple bats tied the game back up in the fifth. McKoy led off the frame with a single to left, advancing to third on a one-base knock by Perez. Redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak muscled a fly ball into center, giving McKoy time to tag and score to knot the game at 4-4.
A five-run seventh by Xavier would not be answered by the Owls, however, and one more insurance run in the eighth put the final score at 10-4. Temple committed two errors to aid the big inning for Xavier.
Senior Ryan Ferguson singled in the seventh to keep his 21-game hit streak alive, while Nikorak was held hitless seeing his 11-game hit streak end.
Game two of the three game series is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Temple junior Brant Norlander (2-0) going against Xavier sophomore Jon Richard (2-2).
