Men's Crew Earns Three Medals at Murphy Cup

Lightweight 4 wins gold with varsity and 2nd varsity eights taking silver

PHILADELPHIA -
The Temple men's lightweight 4 won gold Saturday at the 29th Annual Murphy Cup, but the Owls two eights had to settle for silver in one of the top collegiate regattas held on the Schuylkill River.

Temple's varsity 8, rowing in its new Jason "JR" Read shell, came in 4.43 seconds behind first place Virginia. Temple was 2.05 seconds ahead of 2010 champion Jacksonville. The Owls top boat, comprised of junior James Barr (stroke), senior Scott Waters (7-seat), junior Jason Cartwright (6-seat), junior Brian Reehill (5-seat), freshman Fergal Barry (4-seat), junior Aaron Heyde (3-seat), sophomore Mike Mirabella (2-seat), senior John Masterson (bow) and junior Donald Norris (cox), had won its morning heat, defeating second place La Salle by 3.97 seconds.

Virginia again topped Temple for gold in the second varsity 8 race. The Owls boat, comprised of sophomore Kevin Nally (stroke), junior Mike VanAssche (7-seat), senior Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), junior Joe Bellesheim (5-seat), junior Diordje Vilimanovic (4-seat), freshman Piotr Grudzien (3-seat), junior Alex Klein (2-seat), junior Brandon Joyce (bow) and sophomore Matthew Sbei (cox), were only 2.02 seconds behind the winning Cavalier eight. The teams were in the same heat with Virginia winning over Temple by 6.33 seconds.

The Owls' lightweight 4, comprised of junior Stephen Brady (stroke), sophomore Chris Roberts (3-seat), sophomore Richard Ehmer (2-seat), senior Nick Contino (bow) and junior Samuel Scimeca (cox), defeated Carnegie Mellon by 4.72 seconds to win gold. They also bested Carnegie Mellon by 4.19 seconds in their heat.

Temple next travels across the country to compete in the San Diego Classic next Saturday and Sunday.
