POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After winning three of four Atlantic 10 games this weekend, the Temple softball team struggled on the road in a non-conference doubleheader against Marist, losing 1-0 and 12-4 to the Red Foxes Tuesday afternoon.
In the opener, senior hurler Kristen Marris (7-8) allowed just four hits and one first inning run, but that would be all Marist would need in the game. Two of the Red Foxes hits came in the opening frame, the second was an RBI single by Danielle Koltz that scored Megan Lamoureux with the only run of the contest. Paige Lewis, who hurled a four-hit shutout, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first. Samantha Schoell and Sarah Prezioso both walked with Stephanie Pasquale singling to load the bases. Lewis, who struck out six, settled down and fanned Ali Robinson and Rachel Knable.
Temple had runners in base in every inning but the second, but could not get the key hit to tie the game.
The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as Pasquale connected on a three-run homer and Meghan Marley followed with a solo shot. That would be all the offense the Owls would muster off Emily Osterhaus while Marist exploded for 12 runs over the next four innings, 10 off starter Brooklin White (5-7) to complete the sweep. Junior Nicole DiVirgilio, who extended her hitting streak to 15 games, delivered the big blow, a grand slam in the third inning.
The Owls (13-17) next travel to Fordham for two games, starting with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Friday. The teams will also square off on Saturday at noon, before George Washington comes to Ambler for a Sunday doubleheader (noon).
